A website’s success is said to be gauged by its number of visitors and social media fans. We all know that the first thing every visitor does, after entering your site, is check out what you’ve got on offer for them i.e. information and images explains Peter DeCaprio. This post will introduce you to the different types of images sizes required for Social Media Networks like Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, LinkedIn, etc…

Let us begin with an example:

This is an image posted on my personal Facebook page at a resolution of 1102px x 1604px which is around 2MB in size. If I had to upload this image directly onto any of my Social Networking sites, I would have to resize it into smaller dimensions as most networks have a 2MB file size limit.

Another reason for resizing images is to save storage space, especially if you plan to upload many of them. You can resize images in your favorite photo editing software or use a free online Image Resizer tool like the one at www.online-image-editor.com/resize/ which I used for this post and am very easy to use even for a beginner!

The most important thing to understand here is that there are different types of image resolutions required by Social Networks – Images for profile pictures, cover photos, images in news feeds and in comments, etc… In this post, we will be focusing on Cover Photos mostly but the tips given will help you with any type of Social Media Network.

Cover Photos:

Almost all Social Media Networks have a 2MB file size limit so your image should be around 1200px x 630px – Anything more than that will not be displayed, even though it might have taken you hours of effort in cropping and uploading but the result would just go waste as only part of it will be seen explains Peter DeCaprio.

Profile Pictures:

Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and most other Social Networks require a profile picture that is at least 180px x 180px – So make sure to resize your image accordingly.

News Feed Images:

The recommended dimensions for images in the news feed are 600px x 315px but you can go up to 1200px x 630px without any problems.

Comment Images:

The ideal size for images used in comments is 506px x 506px but they can be up to 1200px x 630px and still look great.
